What We're Listening To

Kathleen has always been an avid audiobook listener and has recently made the switch to podcasts. Andreas is slowly getting into it as well. We like to find books and podcasts that give us things to talk about. If you're curious about what it is that we've been listening to and how we like them, check out the list below. If you have more recommendations, please let us know! For books, Kathleen is also an avid Goodreads user, so check out her account there.

What we've listened to so far:
Podcasts:
  • This Podcast Will Kill You - This is Kathleen's Favorite podcast. It was basically made for her. They choose a new disease for every episode and talk about the biology, the history and the current state of the disease. We have listened to every episode and download the new ones as soon as we can. They also have a Goodreads list of books about diseases, most of which they reference. All of those books are on our "To Read" list.
  • The Weirdest Thing I Learned This Week - Another great podcast. Every week they cover three weird science facts that are always interesting.
  • Spooked - A podcast from The Moth telling supernatural stories in their lead up to Halloween. It was recommended to us as an October listen, and it does set the mood for the season.
  • Bundyville - An interesting podcast from Longreads/Oregon Public Broadcasting with two seasons. The first season is all about the Bundys, the confrontation on their ranch and the Malheur occupation. The second season is more generally about extremism in American. Interesting and aggravating, not necessarily on our "Must Listen" list.
  • The Habitat - A relatively short series from Gimlet about the a NASA experiment in which they put six people in a fact Mars situation in Hawaii. They had to live in a habitat and not go outside without space suits for a year. We were hoping that it would be more scientific and less reality TV but it was still interesting.
  • This American Life - Always a classic. There is an infinite supply of this podcast with more coming out everyday. We couldn't possibly listen to all of it, but we listen to a couple every now and then and they are usually great.
  • Savage Love - A sex advice column from the Stranger, a magazine in Seattle. Again, there is more of this then we could possibly binge (one a week, every week since 2006). But we listen occasionally. We are a married couple after all.
  • Twenty Thousand Hertz - A recommended podcast about sound. We listened to a few, haven't gotten super into it but haven't given up on listening to more in the future.
  • SBS Deutsch - A german radio podcast from Australia that we listen to sometimes on Deutsches Donnestag.

Books:
  • Hillbilly Elegy, JD Vance - Fascinating Autobiography about a growing up a poor boy from Kentucky in Ohio. The book talks a lot about the current state of Appalachia, the culture and current struggles. We really enjoyed reading this, especially as we passed through Appalachia.
  • The Long Road to Gettysburg, Jim Murphy - Quick read about the battle of Gettysburg, told by looking at the activities of two soldiers. We were hoping for a book that was going to give a little more context to the battle but this was interesting too. Quick listen that we listened to while in Gettysburg.
  • Misty of Chincoteague, Marguerite Henry - Cute kids book about the wild horses of Assateague. A classic and childhood favorite of Kathleen's that Andreas hadn't heard of. Also a super fast read.
  • Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer - A good book for this trip, given that it is about a boy taking off on his own journey to see the world. We liked hearing about some of the places we've been in Alaska and it started interesting conversation.
  • The Host, Stephenie Meyer - Intriguing premise about a parasite controlling humans. Not super well written and nearly completely spoiled by overly dramatic teenage infatuation.
  • Norse Mythology, Neil Gaiman - Interesting. We love Neil Gaiman's writing style.
  • Anansi Boys, Neil Gaiman - Our favorite of the Neil Gaiman books so far. More or less a modern take on Anansi stories of West African mythology.
  • American Gods, Neil Gaiman - Obviously a classic. Kathleen had already read it but thought it was worth listening to again. Especially since it is a "Finding America" story.
  • The Four, Scott Galloway - A non-fiction book about the power of the four huge American companies: Amazon, Apple, Google and Facebook. It was ok.
  • A Man Called Ove, Fredrik Backman - This one took us a little while to get into but we ended up really liking it. It's about the life of a cranky old Swedish man. The writing style is super unique and intriguing.
